One can get a very thorough cleaning--and drying--at Hasaki, a sushi restaurant on E. 9th Street in Manhattan.

Drom, a nice subterranean nightclub, is also very hygienic.

Fanfare Samenakoa brassed a chilly backyard barbeque in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn last night. The groovy sound got us moving and warmed up a misty night.

Tight jazz players, with intermittent French rap, Samenakoa will be very busy in New York this week. Take a listen on their myspace page and check out their touring schedule.

The streets of Austin, Texas were lit by moon towers starting in 1895. Seventeen are still standing.

We ate an El Salvadoran restaurant, located in a former Dairy Queen. Things were big there, too. The beers and glasses of water were enormous.

Lenny Pickett played at The Stone on Sunday night, January 13.

He played tenor half the time during this solo show, in which he played against taped tracks. He explained that the pieces had been written for various benefit performances where he did not have a budget for a band. The pieces had no titles and were instead marked with the name of the show or, more cryptically, were marked with unhelpful notes like "1."

The other night I saw Sex Mob at The Stone.

It was only three-quarters of Sex Mob: Steven Bernstein on slide trumpet, Tony Scherr on bass, Briggan Krauss on alto sax--though he did have a baritone sax leaning coyly in its stand for the second show, which we missed, instead partaking of a mediocre dinner at a Frenchish bistro with a Polish name. Alas.
