Slovenian accused of Srebrenica crimes

LJUBLJANA -- There is one Slovenian among the dozen or so people recently indicted for committing war crimes in Srebrenica.

His name is Franc Kos, and he is reportedly hiding in the Republic of Srpska under an assumed identity.

Based on interviews with witnesses at the Hague Tribunal, the prosecution in Sarajevo has called for an investigation to be launched into ten or so people suspected of genocide in Srebrenica, including Kos.

Kos’ name was mentioned by Hague witnesses, according to Slovenian POP television, which added that most of the witnesses accused him of attacks on civilians during the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

According to trial records, Kos was the leader of a paramilitary group accused of killing several hundred and even thousand Muslims in Srebrenica. According to witnesses, Kos’s nickname was “Slovenac” (Slovenian) or Žuća.

The news that a Slovenian national was among those suspected of genocide was confirmed to POP TV by the police in Celje, as well as the local prosecution, which is already looking into the allegations that Kos committed crimes in Srebrenica together with Bosnian and Serbian nationals.

It was also confirmed that Kos had changed his identity and was living under a different name in the Republic of Srpska.

Slovenian media added that he was not currently in Slovenia, meaning that there was little chance of any charges of genocide being filed against him in Slovenia, where the crime of genocide carries a prison sentence of between 10 and 30 years.
